San Diegans for Open Government v. San Diego Unified School District (2018)

Reason for Suing: San Diegans for Open Government (SDOG) sued the San Diego Unified School District after it announced that it would automatically delete hundreds of millions of e-mail messages, no matter how old they were.  SDOG’s lawsuit was consolidated with a related lawsuit filed by a local media outlet.

Outcome: SDOG obtained an injunction that prohibited destruction of the e-mail messages, at which point the district agreed to delete only those e-mail messages more than two years old.

Documents: Superior Court Complaint; Agreement for New E-mail Policy.
